What to Expect at Your First Invisalign Consultation
If you've been thinking about Invisalign for a while and putting off the consultation, here's exactly what happens — so the next thing on your to-do list can finally come off.
The first Invisalign consultation is the appointment most adults overthink. People imagine pressure, upsells, complicated decisions made on the spot. Our version is genuinely none of those things. Here's what actually happens, start to finish.
Before you arrive (10 minutes)
We send a short intake form ahead of your visit — health history, what you're hoping to address, and a few questions about your timeline. Most patients complete it on their phone in under five minutes; paper forms are available at the office if you prefer.
Hello and conversation (10 minutes)
The first ten minutes are a conversation. We ask what you'd like to change about your smile, whether you've had orthodontic treatment before, and what your timeline looks like — an upcoming event, a professional milestone, or simply when the time is right. We'll also discuss whether you're set on Invisalign or open to braces. Understanding your goals first makes the clinical assessment that follows far more useful.
The clinical exam (5 minutes)
A quick visual exam of your teeth, bite, and gums. We're looking for the things that determine whether Invisalign is a good fit — gum health, bite alignment, jaw symmetry, any structural concerns. This is also where we'd flag anything outside ortho's scope (a chipped front tooth that needs restorative work first, gum disease that should be addressed, etc.).
The 3D digital scan
This replaces the goopy impressions you may remember from old-school orthodontics. We use a wand-shaped scanner to capture a 90-second 3D scan of your teeth. Zero discomfort. The scan turns into a precise digital model of your bite in real time.
The single most useful part of the consultation: we generate a 3D simulation of your projected smile before you commit to anything.
The 3D smile preview (10 minutes)
Using the scan, we generate an Invisalign treatment simulation — a side-by-side view of your teeth now and where they'd be at the end of treatment. You can see the movement frame by frame. This is where most people make their decision: not when we tell them what's possible, but when they see their own future smile on the screen.
The plan and the price (5 minutes)
You leave with a printed (or emailed) treatment plan that includes: estimated treatment length, number of aligners, expected visits, all-in fee with no hidden costs, what your insurance covers, and what financing options are available. Everything written down so you can take it home and think about it.
What we don't do
We don't ask you to sign anything that day. We don't quote a "today only" price. We don't pressure you into starting next week. We don't recommend Invisalign if your case would have a better outcome with braces — we'll say so, and explain why. The whole conversation is built around the assumption that you'll make a better decision with information than with pressure.
What happens after
Most patients take a day or two to think it over. Some come back with questions; we welcome that. Some decide to start; we get them scheduled. Some decide it's not the right time; that's completely fine, and they're welcome back whenever it is. The consultation is free either way.
If you've been on the fence, this is your nudge. Book the visit. Worst case, you leave with a 3D simulation of your future smile and zero commitments. Best case, the thing you've been putting off becomes the thing you've started.
